The Mix Verification Tester (MVT) manufactured by Pavement Technology, Inc. of Covington, Georgia is a compact version of the well known and industry proven Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA). The MVT is used for rut testing plant produced mixes and is intended to be located in the Asphalt Plant QC/QA Testing Laboratory. It is capable of testing 2 Superpave Gyratory Specimens or 1 Beam Specimen in an environmentally controlled chamber. Load is applied through a concave wheel fitted over a pneumatic hose. A control system acquires deformation measurements and plots these measurements in a numeric and graphical format.
The greatest benefit of the MVT is verifying and comparing that the plant produced mix is consistent with the laboratory mix design. This is important since some times plant produced mixes introduce variables (material variability, degradation of material through the manufacturing process) that are not present in the laboratory mix design. If plant produced mix is inconsistent with the mix design, a user can initiate an immediate investigation and make adjustments and minimize substandard mix before it is placed on the roadway. Finally the MVT provides assurance that the desired quality of Hot Mix Asphalt is placed on the roadway.
To run an MVT test, the technician first takes a representative sample from the truck, places the sample into a Gyratory Compactor Mold, and fabricates two Gyratory Specimens at the design number of gyrations. The technician then determines the Volumetrics of the mix i.e. Voids, VMA, and VFA. These specimens are then placed in the MVT molds, conditioned to the proper temperature, and tested.
SPECIFICATIONS:
DIMENSIONS:
Height: 91 cm (36")
Length: 119 cm (47")
Width: 79 cm (31")
Weight: 900 kgs. (400 lbs.)
SAMPLE CAPACITY:
1 beam specimen or 2 gyratory specimens
COMPONENTS:
Wheel Tracking/Loading System
Pneumatic cylinder (by use of a concave aluminum wheel) applies a repetitive
load through a high-pressure hose to generate contact pressure. The system is
capable of generating up to 200-psi contact pressure.
Sample Holding Assembly
Holds the high-density polyethylene sample mold under the loading system. Tray
slides in and out for easy loading.
Temperature Control System
Testing chamber temperature is microprocessor controlled and has a range from
ambient to 72 C.
Rut Depth Measurement Device
Rut measurements are retrieved by an automated data acquisition system. This
system displays these measurements in a numeric and graphical format. A
micrometer and template may also be used to measure rut depths.
Operating Controls
A touch screen with control interface that is PC compatible is utilized. A
variable speed motor is utilized to change the rate of loading.
